Good quality, free drum kit VSTIs are few and far between. We’ve covered a couple in these pages, but none compare to the thoroughly excellent free SSD5 demo from Steven Slate Drums.

It’s a full working kit, free of limitations, except one: the free version comes with just one kit, instead of the myriad instruments available in the full version. (If you decide to purchase, there are a range of excellent upgrades available including kits mixed by Terry Date, Chris Lord-Alge and more.)

There’s a bonus to the demo version too – you don’t need a pesky iLok to make the whole thing run, which is fantastic.

So how does it sound? It’s kick ass, and head and shoulders above any other free options out there. Get it.
