Personally, I’m not a huge fan of synthesizers. If I’m using a synth, I generally not looking for soft, swelling pads, or mellow washes in the background. If I’m using a synth, I’m after weird, off-kilter strangeness, all the way.
So, I’m a big fan of the Crystal Soft Synth 2.5 from Green Oak Software.
This bad boy has got weirdness in spades. Sure it does those mellow swells etc, but it’s also a brilliant tools for making strange, wonderful and downright unsettling noises. A quick scroll through calls to mind a NIN record or some old-school Marilyn Manson track.
There’s so much you can do with this synth. Personally, I’m lost when it comes to fiddling with the dials, but the pre-sets are so cool, I haven’t felt the need to yet.
Also, check out the Crystal Synth XT 1.9 for iPad.
Nice.
PROS: Easy access to wonderful weirdness
CONS: None
